The Downlow, an evening of storytelling, premiered one year ago; this upcoming show marks the 5th installment of this extremely popular event.
Each Downlow features a different theme and storytellers tell their tales accordingly: Family & Holidays is the starting point for December 21.
This is a one-of-a-kind Telluride theatrical happening is a venue for non-performers and people you see everyday to share some outrageous, funny, touching, and incredible stories with their friends in the community.
“Started by locals Laura Idema & Geneva Shaunette, The Downlow has become a great event for Telluride Theatre. Geneva and Laura approached us saying they had an idea for a storytelling night and it fit perfectly with our mission. We love working with them,” said stated Sasha Sullivan, Telluride Theatre’s Artistic Director. “The show is a part of THE OFF, our program that provides FREE smaller events with a BIG impact.”
Laura Idema added: “We listen to a lot of podcasts – especially storytelling podcasts. Telluride is a community of storytellers, so we thought an event like this would do really well here. Storytelling is such a great way to connect with other people and we loved the idea of hosting a cozy evening for locals. Storytelling is such an organic way to get to know someone. We already feel like we’ve gotten to know so many new people through this process. There’s never a Downlow that occurs without the audience learning something new about someone in our community. I think the whole thing helps us to understand each other better, as well as intentionally making the time and effort to listen.”
Geneva Shaunette went on to state, “Our main goal is to provide a space where people who don’t usually get on stage could feel comfortable being themselves and not too much pressure to be theatrical. The people who live in this town have led such interesting lives and it’s been so fun to hear a hilarious or very personal story about someone I see at the coffee shop three times a week, but have never spoken to before. The Downlow is fun and entertaining, but also accessible if you want to participate. We spend one-on-one time with our storytellers to help them develop their anecdote for the stage while keeping their personal voice.”
